Major Funding Changes Affecting Families

Major Barriers

Have you ever lost your wallet/purse, or had it stolen? The sheer amount of work it takes to replace what was lost/stolen is overwhelming! Similarly, the barriers that homeless individuals face are numerous and certainly overwhelming to those who don’t have the finances or resources to get them replaced. Barriers to those facing homelessness such as lack of basic necessities, medical care, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, past criminal history, and missing personal identification are just a few examples.

A Denton Family Story

Jer and Dominique* are a couple who have experienced long term homelessness all while Jer is fighting lung cancer. The Street Outreach team has met them in the encampment they stay at to build rapport, provide relational and practical support in the form of basic needs, and referrals to resources to get them to shelter.  When the team first met them, they had no identification or what is referred to as “critical documentation.”  The team referred them to short term emergency housing while working with them to get copies of their birth certificates, social security cards, and state ID cards.  These critical documents provide a gateway to so many resources for breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness such as medical care/mental health/substance abuse treatment, job opportunities, and financial support to help those in homelessness get stabilized. COVID created a backlog of appointments in government offices, so it has been taking a longer period of time than in the past to complete applications and receive these critical documents.

Will you partner with us to continue to pull down the barriers that create poverty and homelessness? Together it is possible!
