Major Funding Cuts Affecting Families – Day 3

The Image of Homelessness

What is the first image that comes to mind if you hear “homeless”?

Maybe a panhandler with a sign that is interrupting your drive home? Or a tent city that is taking over a local wooded area? Or the line of people you see outside the local soup kitchen?

There are many perspectives on what homelessness looks like. Through sharing this series of stories, we hope that you will see that it impacts so many…including working families.

A Denton Family Story

Mark* lost his reconstruction job for reasons completely beyond his control. He was a partner in a small reconstruction business and his partner became sick with COVID.  They each contributed to the business with different expertise and skills.  When his partner could not work, they could not keep the contracts they had and could not bid for more opportunities because they were both needed for the jobs.

Mark lost the ability to provide for his pregnant wife and 6 children, the bills spun out of control, and they were evicted and forced to live in their van.

Giving Hope and Grace Like Rain were able to connect them to emergency housing while Mark applied for different types of emergency support and began searching for a new job.  While he is taking so many brave steps to support his family, these steps all take time.

The family is facing the end of their emergency housing and without the government dollars, they face literal homelessness in a matter of days.
